My personal experience as a former co-worker of Jay’s made Trevor’s passing even harder to comprehend. What happened is a reminder that working safely is a priority that must be present all of the time. Trevor’s Story keeps you on the edge of your seat and a consistent range of emotions. It is a humbling and emotional message from a father’s perspective that is an absolute must hear for any and all workers.

I brought Jay in to share Trevor’s Story because it spoke directly to the message I was trying to carry forward in 2025. The way Jay walked us through the “what ifs” of Trevor’s Story was powerful and deeply moving. You could feel it land in the room—people weren’t just listening, they were reflecting. Afterward, our people didn’t see their jobs the same way anymore. The presentation reminded us that every choice, every action, and every moment matters, and that what we do each day has a real impact on the lives around us.

I met Jay at a Safety Conference in Devil’s Lake in 2024 and was very moved by the story he shared with us about his son. I am the Programming Director for the Greater Grand Forks HR Association and as part of that role, it is my responsibility to schedule speakers for our monthly HR Association meetings. I thought of Jay right away as someone who would be great to speak with our members about the importance of Workplace Safety. We not only invited our HR members, but we also invited peers of our community that deal with Safety in their workplaces. We had great turnout at the meeting and excellent feedback from attendees. Many of the attendees expressed that they appreciated how real Jay was and how open he was with sharing his personal story. Jay made a great impact on our association with his heartfelt speech, and many said that they were definitely going to be dedicating more resources to making sure Workplace Safety was a priority at their companies.

Jay Skarphol was a keynote speaker at our 32nd annual South Dakota
Safety & Health Conference. Jay shared a deeply personal story
about the loss of his son in a workplace incident. His willingness to
speak about such a difficult experience brought an important
human perspective to our conference and reminded us why safety
matters in every workplace. We are grateful to Jay for sharing his
family’s story and for turning such a profound loss into a message of
prevention and care. His presentation highlighted the human impact
behind workplace safety and inspired thoughtful reflection among
attendees. We appreciated the courage it took to share his journey
with our audience. Jay’s presentation, rooted in his personal
experience, offered a meaningful perspective that reminded us of
the real-life importance of safe practices on the job.
